Real life can sometimes pale when compared to the imaginary realm. Fictional teachers are no exception – they can be empathetic and supportive or offer a hefty dose of tough love, but they always seem way better than the reality.

Dumbledore
Hogwarts is the dream school of practically every child. As arguably the ultimate teacher, Dumbledore would definitely command attention and perfect behaviour from pupils. His wisdom would be invaluable and his magic would certainly make boring algebra much more intriguing. Now you just have to wait for your entry letter…
Miss Honey
This exceptionally sweet teacher from Roald Dahl’s Matilda is one that could brighten up your school day. Her adoption of Matilda at the end of the book and film is one of the happiest endings out there. On the other hand, Miss Trunchbull is one we definitely wouldn’t want!
Dewey Finn
School of Rock is a classic film and Jack Black’s character is equally iconic. Take your music lessons to the next level by forming a band and taking on professionals in battles or competitions. You could unearth some hidden talent like Dewey did and discover the next rock legend!
Mr Miyagi
The Karate Kid teacher should be a model for mentors everywhere. His persistence in procuring perfection is unrivalled and his somewhat unique methods undeniably had the required impact. His style would definitely make P.E. lessons livelier!
John Keating
Robin Williams’ portrayal of an English teacher in Dead Poets Society offered much more than an insight into ancient lyrics. His passion and profound insights taught his students how to be proud individuals and to access their self-confidence. This man could definitely make Wordsworth’s works more enlightening than Google can!
Yoda
Aside from the dodgy grammar and mysterious advice, Yoda taught the inspirational lesson that we can all achieve anything that we put our mind to. He would possibly need a high chair to teach in an official school, but he’d probably put an enthralling spin on philosophy or religious studies.
Mary Poppins
Okay, she’s not technically a teacher, but she plays a similar guardian/mentor role in the film. Teaching by singing is always a win in my book and I’m sure she’d have a different ditty for every subject. Her handbag could hold everybody’s packed lunch on a school trip and if you didn’t want to wait for the bus home, I’m sure she’d lend you her magical umbrella.
Developing a love of literature is a key aim for educator’s children, but nowadays films and television shows can be equally inspirational. Channelling one of these figures could help you approach teaching in a different way and your lessons will certainly become more unique. Children will love popular culture in the classroom and it’s likely that they’ll become more engaged with the subject. Try it out and see!
